Posting an excerpt from one of our Pro Se Client's email back in the later 2012: "Hi Karen, I wanted to thank you for your time and patience yesterday. What a hard thing to go through, but in the end, with your help, we made great progress. I filed our package with the County Clerk of Court at 4:55pm last night. She seemed surprised and pleased that we did all that voluntarily. She said, "This never happens!" Because there was no reason to serve papers, the cost was $397.50...$411 and change once it was finished. Thank you again. We both really appreciate getting so much accomplished in a day."

– Try Divorce Mediation

By:  Karen E. Cone

Unfortunately, statistics prove to us that marriages fail.  I don’t have to tell any of you that times are tough right now – financially, emotionally and otherwise.  All of us are faced with disputes and conflict in life and we all could use some help in resolving those matters in a peaceful and affordable manner.

Marc Taps, former senior attorney at Legal Services of North Florida said, “There are so many people in our community who can’t afford legal help…”  Marc is right.  You don't always have to litigate....there is another way.  It’s called…..mediation.

[Just this week I provided mediation services to a divorcing couple here at the Mediation Center of Tallahassee.  The couple was having a tough time agreeing on a couple of holiday timesharing issues.  As their mediator, I helped them learn conflict resolution skills that enabled them to not only agree on the issues that were on the table at the time, but they now can use those same skills to successfully work together in the future when disputes arise.  Now tell me……do you think this kind of thing happens in the courtroom?  Not usually!!  This couple successfully...

Divorce and the Holidays

February 13, 2014

By:  Karen E. Cone, Certified Family Mediator

The holidays can be especially stressful for families that have gone through divorce.  Finding the necessary ingredients for handling both the holidays and a family that has been transformed by divorce may not be as difficult as you think.

Children look to their parents as role models and they need to feel emotional and physical security from both parents.  It is possible for parents to accomplish this regardless of whether or not they physically live with their children all the time.

We’ve always been told that actions speak much louder than words.  It is a proven fact that children flourish in an environment in which their needs, both physiological and emotional, are consistently, predictably, and lovingly met.  For children of divorce, this includes permission from each parent to maintain a loving, intimate relationship with the other parent.

For a successful and joyful upcoming holiday season, try the following:

Ø  When it comes to holiday scheduling, put all disputes aside and share the children during the holidays.  Say "yes" without expecting something in return from your former spouse.

Ø  When it comes to gift giving, don’t think of yourself or...

DIVORCE BY MEDIATION --- Yes, You Can!!

February 13, 2014

By: Karen E. Cone, Certified Family Mediator

In Florida, couples can obtain a divorce without attorneys.  Mediation is the way to go when you and your spouse are willing to "work it out" together with the help of a neutral mediator. Karen Cone, owner and primary mediator of the Mediation Center of Tallahassee, has conducted hundreds of "pro se" or "self-represented" divorces.

Couples have found that the cost of divorce using Karen's mediation approach is much less than the retainers and additional fees of two attorneys employed to battle the case out in court.  Such retainers can be $2,000 or more per party, costing the family $4,000 or more.  These figures don't even take into account the attorneys' hourly rates of $200 or more per hour.  If the couple is able to communicate with each other without extreme anger and hostility, mediation is an excellent and affordable alternative to a court battle.

Divorce by mediation is usually faster too.  The Final Judgment (which means....your divorce is final) can be signed by the Judge in about six (6) weeks from the first meeting with the mediator rather than six (6) months to a year or longer in cases with attorneys.

"Karen is a great listener with talents too numerous to mention but acknowledged by her certificates and plaques of recognition. As a mediator, I have not experienced her services directly but have witnessed her interaction in social and business environments giving me confidence in her discretion and confidentiality which her line of work would entail."

Having mediated and observed well over a hundred mediations, watching Karen Cone handle challenging clients during stressful mediations was very enlightening. She was truly masterful in her approach to the difficulties presented by the participants, helping them discover the need to collaborate and compromise to achieve their best possible results, resolving conflict through mediation.
